The Jean Harnett Spay Day USA Grant Project
We have finally finished this grant project!
We are pleased to announce that we exceeded our projections for this grant!
We estimated we would be able to do 135 cats as part of this project we did 146!
We had two cats that were found to be altered once they were sedated. (They were feral cats!)
We did 72 male cats and 74 female cats thus preventing many, many unwanted litters from being born and becoming part of the pet overpopulation crisis.
The Jean Harnett Spay Day (JHSD) was made possible via a grant from The Glenn & Jean Harnett Foundation for which Steel Valley Woofstock is very grateful for this opportunity.
JHSD was for cats and kittens from 8 weeks & up, male or female.
Kittens had to be 8 weeks or 2 lbs to participate. Trap cats accepted.
The purpose of the grant is to encourage private cat owners the importance of spay-neuter and help the cat overpopulation crisis in our area.
Spay Day USA is February 27, 2024.
We had JHSD Spay Day part two on February 27, 2024, and saw more trap cats that day.
JHSD Spay Day part two on Match 7, 2024 was done in cooperation with The Youngstown State University Pre-Veterinary Program with students assisting in examinations, surgery prep, surgery monitoring, surgery aftercare plus helping send them home afterward.
It was a great day for the cats and kids who received valuable hands-on experience needed to apply to veterinary school.
We had to delay a few cats' surgeries because they were too small or sick when they presented on either day but were rescheduled. We finally finished everyone up!
We are grateful for this opportunity from the Glen & Jean Harnett Foundation.
We hope to have another cat spay-a-thon special soon,
Steel Valley Woofstock’s Mission is simple,
Spay Neuter is the answer, Warehousing animals is not.
We help pets through spay-neuter programs, community crisis programs, humane crisis outreach, pet food banks, and education plus support military and police dogs. We focus on smaller-scale rescues without facilities yet with effective community programs. Our focus is the local community in Trumbull, Mahoning, and Mercer County.
